‘A partial hardening has (temporarily) happened to Israel’ Rom.11:25

In Romans 11:25-26 the apostle Paul says, ' I do not want you, believers, to be unaware of this mystery (God’s previously hidden plan)--so that you will not be wise in your own opinion--that a partial hardening has (temporarily) happened to Israel (to last) until the full number of the Gentiles has come in; and so (at that time) all Israel (that is, all Jews who have a personal faith in Jesus as Messiah) will be saved; just as it is written (in Scripture), “The Deliverer (Messiah) will come from Zion, He will remove all ungodliness from Jacob.”’ (Amplified Bible).

It is revealing to look further into this word as this prophecy clearly refers to Israel in the years that lead up to the coming of a Deliverer who shall be the Messiah.

Here in Romans 11:25 the Greek word for ‘hardening’ is ‘pórósis’, also defined as ‘callousness’ meaning ‘hardness of heart, obtuseness.’ The commentator Souter tells us that the word is taken from ’pōros’, a kind of marble, used later of a callus formed on fractured bones; This term can be used figuratively where it can mean a callousness or hardness in general; originally petrifaction, hardness and then the result of this, i.e. metaphorically applied to organs of feeling, meaning insensibility, numbness, obtuseness, dulling of the faculty of perception, deadness. (Source: Strong’s Lexicon #2257, ‘porosis’ and Strong’s Lexicon #4456, ‘pōroō’). Obtuseness means the quality of being slow to understand, or unwilling to try to understand (Dictionary.Cambridge.org).

The history of the Jewish nation of Israel has been fraught with brokenness. From the time of their exile to Babylon in 597 B.C. and 587 B.C. through to the twenty first century the nation has suffered what one might describe as many fractured or broken bones. Bones that have subsequently healed but now have a callus formed on them. The callus herein referred to is figuratively speaking a distinguishing mark upon them as a people group, and it follows on from the many painful events that have happened to them over the millennia. So, it can most certainly be said that the history of the Jewish people is a determining factor in the formulation of their standing and stance on the global stage today.

The statement made by Paul in Romans 11:25-26 could be read as having strong political overtones in the twenty-first century. Israel has taken a hardened stance against its enemies. However, it is also a theological statement, the truth of which will become self-evident as events unfold. It is one of the many signs of the times which lead up to the return of the Messiah, Jesus Christ (Matt.24:32-35).

In this study we consider Biblical prophecy and whether it has any relevance on the current geo-political stage. This is done bearing in mind that Biblical prophecy, unless otherwise stated, is not time-barred. In other words, it can have a relevance long past the time it was told.

An example of this is found here in Paul’s writings for in Romans 11:25-26 he is quoting and explaining the prophecy of Is.59:16-21 where we read of how the rulers of this world meet their end when Christ comes to set up His Kingdom. Daniel refers to this matter (Dan.9:26-27; 12:7) and so does Jesus (Luke 21:24b). These prophecies corroborate each other, and their outcomes happen in the far distant future from when they were first told to Isaiah, Daniel, Jesus, Paul, and John.

Daniel was told, ‘But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase’ (Dan.12:4 NKJV), and ‘that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished’ (Dan.12:7 NKJV). These prophecies refer to the final years of this Age.

John was told: ‘Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen’ (Rev.1:7 NKJV).
